Hi my name is Cheronda Scarborough and I'm from a little town called Bishopville, SC. I don't have any children but I always have a car load of children whenever I leave home. I'm a teacher assistant at Bishopville Primary School. It is a 4year old kindergarten/ inclusion class. This is my seventh year working as a teacher assistant. I've worked the following two years working as a receptionist/ secretary. I have worked with children of all ages. My goal is to one day work in the technology field.

If the child has difficulty understanding the Picture Communication Symbol (PCS) line drawings and needs a more concrete representation, a good software program to use is Picture This (20). This program allows for the presentation of real photos, without risking ambiguous background clutter, which can be a part of personal photographs. Picture This contains over 2,700 photos from numerous categories which are ideal for children with special needs. Was: $89.00 -Now: $69.00 http://www.autismstuff.com/picture/pic_picturethisproed3cd.htm I would use Picture this to help my children become better understanding of their schedule. Touch Window: The purpose of the touch window is to allow the child to "navigate" and "interact" with the computer by touching the screen, rather than operating the mouse. Touch window/screen can be easily mounted on the computer monitor with the user simply touching the screen to replace mouse actions. The use of a touch screen can assist a student who experiences difficulty understanding the abstract relationship between the mouse actions and the resulting actions on the screen. With a touch screen, the concrete relationship between what the child sees and what the child directly activates is established (25). The Touch Window is available for Macintosh or Windows platforms from Edmark for approximately $353.00. http://www.enablemart.com/Catalog/Touch-Screens/Edmark-TouchWindow-USB-Win-Mac This will give my students be able to use their hand to touch pictures on the computer screen. First Categories by Laureate Learning Systems First Categories by Laureate Learning Systems begins with an assessment to determine which categories a student does not already know. During training, a student is asked to identify the item that belongs to a particular category. The program continually monitors a student's performance and then tailors instructional delivery to his or her unique needs. The cost is $230.00. This will help my students identify real life objects. Fun With Feelings children learn to read the state of mind of others around them — improving both their social interaction and personal well-being. Price: $49.00 http://www.autismcoach.com/category_s/38.htm Help students understand feelings. The Autism Academy of South Carolina (AASC) is a new, Columbia-based, not-for-profit school offering intensive, individualized instruction to students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). AASC was founded in 2010 by a group of concerned parents of children with autism, educators and youth development professionals in response to the rapidly growing need for resources and support for families of children diagnosed with ASD. http://autismacademyofsc.com/facts.php Autism World The site provides information about Autism Spectrum Disorders, answers to frequently asked questions and the latest news. http://www.autism-world.com Autism Society of America The voice of the autism community http://www.autism-society.org/ Caterpillar Story Book Activity Books with repeated lines and predictable stories are great for PECS activities because the repetition and predictability provide a functional context for multiple opportunities for requesting or commenting. Narrative with Lesson Plan |
I really enjoyed this class because it was a very informative class. There was a lot of information that I learned about that is supposed to be available to our special ed. students. I liked found about what is considered assistive technology. The assignments were very beneficial to me for the classroom.
The Educator Toolkit was an assignment that collected tools that would be beneficial in our individual classroom. The tools that I chose would be useful for the autistic children and slow learners. The part that I liked about this project is that I was creating a tool that was helpful to me and my colleagues. I will continue to add to my toolkit while I'm here at Lesley.
The Resource Brochure that I created was very informative. The brochures were created to give information about various disabilities and assistive technology. My brochure was about autism and some assistive technology that educators used to help autistic children learn. My brochure was designed to inform parents about autism.
The Field Research and Presentation helped me find out what kinds of assistive technology were in our schools and the IEP plan of a special need student. I talked to my Special Ed. chairperson and she gave me all the necessary information I needed for my research. This assignment was helpful to me and my colleagues. The VoiceThread part was a little hard because my voice kept fading out. The information that I included in my powerpoint will be useful in the classroom. I think I did a good job with my presentation even with my voice fading out on VoiceThread.

It looks like you have found many resources relating to autism. I'm assuming you work with kids who have autism? Was it hard to find resources in this category that were free? Looks like a great list!

You have included many useful resources in your toolkit. Touch Window seems to be a great alternative instead of a mouse. Nice job.
